Wyvern

The wyvern is built for rapid overland movement, combined with extremely efficient hunting. This picture, while close to the truth, is not strictly accurate- the wyverns horns are much smaller, they only have one long, scythelike toe for each foot, and their head comes to more of a point.
the wyvern is designed without the ability to move any direction but forwards, a fact often exploited in a wyvern hunt. In fact, their legs don't turn at all- the entire muscular and skeletal structure is designed to move forward at the highest speeds found anywhere in nature (92 mph, to be exact). When running, all of their control comes from their wings, which are normally kept tightly folded against their sides in order to streamline their run, unless being used for attacking, gliding, or turning.
Wyverns generally attack in three ways. They either perform a straightforward ram with their pointed, reinforced head, which often will severely wound or kill their prey, throw their wings out to swing into the air, and savage their prey with their talons, or they turn at rapid speeds to swing their spiked tail.
They are relatives of the dragons- it is believed that dragons migrated to the scumlands years ago, and slowly lost the ability to fly. Also, anything unessential was stripped in order to lower weight- they cannot breath fire and their scales are slightly thicker than paper. Tough, but not exactly spearproof (that being said, their coat is much more flexible and less broken up than that of a dragon).
wyvern bone is a valuable commodity. It is extremely lightweight and durable, and has a naturally occurring ivory sheen. It can be sharpened to incredible points that hardly ever chip or lose their edge, or just used as an expensive building material. It can fetch exorbitant prices in the Rotarian market.
