Navy
Acaen military ships are of two primary varieties, transports and storm ships. Transports are very similar to merchant ships, with large broad bows intended to carry large amounts of men and cargo, and some of the most stable of all ships during a storm. Storm ships are the primary fighting ships, and are based on pirate schooners and cutters. Narrower, but significantly faster and more agile, storm ships are meant to be used to out maneuver the enemy and hit him with a few shots of balistae, then board and let the marines do their work.
Because the majority of Acaen shipping is owned or at least overseen by House Shymaris they place great emphasis on trade not being interrupted either by pirates or war. So merchant ships are often either escorted by storm ships or have marines on board. The Marines are some of the most ruthless and fearless soldiers in the Realm, quite accustomed fighting on the deck of a ship during a tempest, and often at night. They received there inspiration for how they operate by fighting against pirates, and then adopted their tactics and combined them that of the Coastmen, those who invaded from the seas and became Acaen. They fight with sea hooks (a sort of harpoon with a billhook,) marine swords (a combination of cutlass and kilij,) marine bucklers (small targes) boarding axes and daggers. They are armored in blue dyed leather jerkins reinforced with slats of wood to protect against knives and arrows. They fight primarily on ships, though they also serve as light infantry and perform beach assaults.
